Debunking the Denture Myths: 9 Things You Might Not Know

Dentures can be a life-changing solution for those missing teeth, restoring your ability to smile, chew, and speak confidently. But there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding dentures that might deter you from exploring this option. Let’s bust some common myths and reveal the truth behind dentures:

Myth 1: Dentures don’t look real

Dentures from professional Denture Clinics are created to a high level and replicate natural teeth in all areas, including aesthetics. At Kevin Manners Denture Clinics we make all our dentures at a state of the art dental laboratory based in Mapperley.

Dentures are created to synthetically match the exact shade of the wearer’s gums and teeth and measurements of your mouth are used to ensure the dentures match the size of your mouth and the height and shape of your natural teeth. This creates a natural-looking denture, indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Are you still sceptical about how realistic dentures look? We asked one of our clients Chris what he through of his dentures and this is what he had to say:

Myth 2: Dentures are hard to maintain

Dentures require very similar maintenance to natural teeth. Different types of dentures require different levels of maintenance, however, the general rule for cleaning is to brush, soak and brush again and it’s recommended that this is always done over a bowl/sink of water or over a folded towel – just in case you happen to drop them.
Just like your natural teeth, bacteria can build up on your dentures which can lead to oral disease and infections. Maintaining good oral health and regularly cleaning your dentures can prevent this from happening.

Myth 3: Dentures move around in the mouth

Quality dentures from professional Denture Clinics will not move around in the mouth when eating or talking. Their close fit along the gum line creates a natural suction that prevents them from moving around in the mouth.
While many modern dentures do not require an adhesive, you may feel more comfortable with an additional method of securing dentures to your mouth. If you’re considering using an adhesive with your dentures, speak to our team who will be happy to provide advice and recommendations.

Well-fitted dentures should stay securely in place with the help of modern denture adhesives. We take precise measurements to ensure a snug fit, significantly minimising the chances of embarrassing incidents. While most dentures are removable, you can even opt for implant supported dentures that fit into your gums with screws and are just as secure as natural teeth!

Myth 4: Dentures affect your eating ability

Learning how to eat with dentures can take some getting used to, but making small changes to your eating habits will make this process easier. When dentures are first fitted biting or chewing can result in dentures slipping out of position and certain types of food can get stuck under the dentures causing discomfort. Simple changes can be made when eating initially to make the process of eating with dentures easier and to increase your confidence when eating with dentures.

Myth 5: Dentures affect your ability to talk

It can be hard to get used to speaking with dentures when they are first fitted. However, with practice, this difficulty goes away. Some sounds may be difficult to pronounce initially while getting used to wearing the dentures and the dentures shifting in the mouth may cause a clicking sound however these issues both go away shortly after first getting the dentures.

Myth 6: Dentures are uncomfortable to wear

Do you worry that dentures will be uncomfortable to wear?

Whether you opt for full dentures or partial dentures, we ensure a comfortable fit!

While an adjustment period is normal, dental technicians work meticulously to ensure a comfortable fit. The initial discomfort typically fades as you get used to wearing dentures. Properly fitted dentures should feel comfortable and secure, enhancing your ability to speak and eat without discomfort.

Myth 7: Only seniors need dentures

Artificial teeth are often associated with the elderly, but tooth loss can affect people of all ages due to various factors, including accidents and oral health issues. Modern dental technology offers a range of different types of dentures, and dentures are suitable for anyone who wants to replace missing teeth and seeks a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution.

Myth 8: Dentures are noticeable to others

We hear this one all the time!

Many people are worried that others will be able to noticeably tell they are wearing dentures.

Our skilled technicians work diligently to create dentures that match your natural features, making them virtually indistinguishable from real teeth. Properly fitted dentures blend seamlessly with your smile, allowing you to interact confidently without concerns about their visibility.

Rather than hiding your smile, you will feel proud to show off your pearly whites!

Myth 9: Dentures contribute to bone loss

While it’s true that natural teeth provide stimulation to the jawbone, leading to bone density, modern dentures are designed to minimise any adverse effects. Dentures distribute forces evenly, helping to maintain jawbone health.
