5 Tips for Adjusting to New Dentures: Making the Transition Smooth

Have you recently had dentures fitted?

Are you looking to get dentures soon?

The first few weeks might bring some challenges, but we’re here to give you 5 tips on how to adjust to new dentures, so you can go about your day without thinking about denture discomfort!

Read on to discover how you can make your transition to wearing dentures easy.

Start with soft foods

It can feel a little weird eating at first, and you might need to build your tolerance to certain foods. We recommend starting with soft foods, like mash potatoes, shepherds pie, pasta and rice.

This is because the soft tissues of your mouth, such as your gums, are still getting used to the dentures that sit on top of them. Once you’re comfortable, you can start introducing harder, chewier foods into your diet, like steaks and apples.

Use your back teeth to bite into foods

Biting with your front teeth can potentially cause your dentures to lift from the back, causing denture fitting issues! It is alway best to use your back teeth to bite into hard foods to prevent fitting issues which will cause further discomfort.

If this occurs, you will need to speak to your dental clinician about your dentures not fitting properly.

Practice talking alone

Whether you have complete dentures or partial dentures, you’re going to have to get used to speaking with a new set of teeth. If your dentures are fitted properly, it shouldn’t take you too long to get used to speaking with them, but for some people, it can take a while.

If you want to build confidence speaking amongst peers, or if you have a career that requires public speaking, we recommend practising speaking alone by reading aloud.

Listen carefully to the sounds that you make.

Are they clear?

Does it feel comfortable to pronounce certain sounds?

You can even ask a trusted friend to listen and provide you with feedback.

Maintain good oral hygiene

The cleaner your dentures are, the less likely you are to develop sores and infections which can cause discomfort. To avoid this, make sure to follow your dental clinicians instructions on how to clean your dentures, such as using a denture cleaner and a soft brush, and allowing them to soak overnight.

Not only does good oral hygiene benefit your dentures, it benefits your remaining teeth, ensuring they remain strong and healthy.

How to make your dentures fit better

Slight discomfort can be normal in the first few weeks of wearing your dentures. However, if the discomfort is extreme, or if your mild discomfort persists for longer than a few weeks, it is important to notify your dental clinician as there could be a reason for your denture pain.

The issue could be that your dentures may need adjusting, and your dental clinician can help make your dentures fit better, so you can go about your life without denture issues.
