10 Essential Tips for Mastering Eating with Dentures

Getting used to dentures takes time, especially when it comes to eating. But with a little patience, practice, and a few smart tips, you’ll soon feel confident enjoying your favourite foods again.

If you’re completely new to dentures or just looking to feel more comfortable at mealtimes, here are Kevin Manner’s 10 essential tips to help you feel more at ease with eating.

1. Start with soft, easy-to-chew foods

When you first get your dentures, stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, soups, scrambled eggs, or yoghurt. These are gentle on your gums and help you get used to the feel of chewing with dentures.

2. Cut your food into smaller pieces

Taking smaller bites makes it easier to chew evenly and stops food from putting too much pressure on one side. This gives you better control while you’re still getting used to the new feeling.

3. Chew on both sides of your mouth

To keep your dentures stable and balanced, try to chew food evenly on both sides. This helps prevent your dentures from slipping out of place and spreads pressure more evenly across your gums.

4. Be patient with yourself!

It’s totally normal for adjusting to new dentures to feel tricky at first. Give your mouth time to adjust, and don’t be afraid to take things slowly. You’ll build confidence over time – trust us!

5. Avoid sticky or hard foods at the beginning

When you’re still adjusting to new dentures, it’s always better to avoid things like chewing gum, toffees, crusty bread, or nuts.

These can be tough on the teeth and could even dislodge or damage your dentures.

6. Check in with your denture technician

If eating still feels uncomfortable after a few weeks, or your dentures slip often, it’s worth checking in with your dentist.

Sometimes a small tweak to your denture fit can make a big difference in the overall fit and feel.

7. Have water with meals

Dentures can reduce how much saliva your mouth produces, which might make food feel dry or harder to swallow. Sipping water between bites can make mealtimes much more comfortable.

8. Take care of your dentures and gums

Looking after your dentures is an essential part of the adjustment process!

Clean your dentures daily and give your gums a massage with a soft toothbrush or cloth. Good oral and dental hygiene keeps your mouth healthy and helps reduce any irritation from eating.

9. Practice at home before going out

If you’re nervous about eating or speaking in public, try practicing at home!

Read out loud, speak in front the mirror, and build up to more textured meals at your own pace, this can help you feel more confident when you go out.

10. Give your new dentures time

It’s normal for your mouth to feel different when you first start wearing dentures.

With patience and care, you’ll soon find your rhythm and enjoy your favourite meals again.
