The Denture Process from Start to Finish

At Kevin Manners Denture Clinics, we know getting new dentures can feel like a big decision.

That’s why we take the time to explain each part of the denture process and answer all your questions when you visit us, so you can feel in control every step of the way.

We also believe everyone deserves a comfortable, confident smile, as well as a denture journey that feels easy, supportive, and tailored right to your needs.

With over 30 years of experience and hundreds of happy denture patients telling us how good they felt about the process, you’re in good hands with us.

In this blog, we’ll discuss the denture process from start to finish, so you can go into it with confidence!

1. Free denture consultation

Your denture journey will kick off with a free initial denture consultation.

These appointments normally last around 30 minutes. We’ll talk about your medical and dental history, examine your mouth, and might take X-rays or photos if they’re needed.

We’ll discuss what you need and the different types of dentures available, then explain the process and cost of your dentures.

No matter which denture type we recommend, you’ll leave with a clear idea of what happens next.

2. Dental impressions and bite assessment

At your second visit (about 30 minutes), we’ll take impressions of both your upper and lower jaws. These moulds are essential because they’re what we use to create your custom dentures.

During visit three (also 30 minutes), we’ll look at how your jaws meet and help you choose the shape, size, and shade of your denture teeth.

3. Wax denture try-on

On visit four, you’ll try a wax version of your dentures to give you a chance to see how they look and feel.

We’ll make any tweaks you need to the colour, shape, or position until you’re happy – there’s no extra fee for this step!

4. Final denture fitting

The final appointment (around 15 minutes) is where we fit your finished dentures.

We’ll make minor adjustments to make sure they’re comfortable and functional, then the denture process is complete!

You’ll pay for your new dentures at this stage, and we’ll arrange a quick follow-up appointment at this point too.

Tooth removal and gum health

Sometimes, before getting new dentures, we need to remove a few natural teeth.

This is an important if you have any loose, broken, overcrowded, or decayed teeth – so your dentures fit comfortably and look their best.

Your Clinical Dental Technician will spot any issues during your consultation and refer you to one of our trusted local dentists for the extraction.

It’s done under local anaesthetic and is normally very straightforward. After that, your gums need time to heal (usually 3 to 6 months) while you wear a temporary or immediate denture.

This healing period makes sure your final dentures fit exactly right once your mouth settles.

Getting used to new dentures

It’s completely normal for it to take a few weeks to get used to new dentures, but there are some things you can do to make the process easier:

  • Eat soft foods at first and take small bites.
  • Practice speaking aloud with your dentures in if your speech feels off.
  • Clean your dentures gently with soap, warm water, and a soft brush. Don’t use toothpaste to clean dentures!
  • Soak your dentures overnight to keep them in shape.
  • Brush your gums and tongue for oral health.

You’ll have a denture check-up after a few weeks, and annual reviews to make sure the fit stays right. If you need any denture repairs or adjustments down the line, we’ve got that covered too.
