Restoring Your Smile and Function with Partial Dentures

If you’ve lost one or more of your natural teeth, partial dentures can make a huge difference to your everyday life.

Partial dentures are a practical solution that can boost your confidence, restore your smile, and support daily functions like eating, speaking, and more.

In this blog, we’ll answer some common questions about partial dentures, like:

  • What is a partial denture?
  • How much are partial dentures?
  • Can you sleep in partial dentures?
  • How do you clean partial dentures?

And more – let’s get started.

What is a partial denture?

A partial denture is a removable set of false teeth made to fill in any gaps left by missing teeth. It clips onto your existing teeth using small clasps and is shaped to fit your mouth comfortably.

Most partial dentures are made from a mix of acrylic and metal, and they’re designed to match the colour and look of your natural teeth as closely as possible.

If you’re looking for a way to replace a missing tooth (or several teeth), a partial denture could be a good option to help restore the function and appearance of your smile.

Can you sleep in partial dentures?

While it’s technically possible, we usually advise against sleeping in partial dentures, unless it’s been recommended by your general dentist.

Removing partial dentures at night gives your gums a chance to rest and keeps everything healthier in the long run. It also helps reduce the risk of soreness or infection.

That said, if you need to sleep in it occasionally (for example, if you’re travelling with dentures), it shouldn’t cause any serious harm as long as it’s clean and fits well.

How do you clean partial dentures?

Keeping your partial denture clean is key to avoiding bad breath, staining, or gum irritation, which are all vital for good oral health and hygiene.

A clean denture is less likely to build up plaque, develop odours, or become damaged over time – so by keeping them clean, you can help make your dentures last longer.

Here’s a denture cleaning routine we recommend at Kevin Manners:

  • Rinse your denture after meals to remove food particles and debris
  • Brush it daily using a soft-bristle brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner (don’t use regular toothpaste to clean dentures – it can be too harsh and may scratch and damage the surface)
  • Soak it overnight in a denture cleaning solution to keep it fresh and hygienic
  • Rinse it well before putting it back in your mouth, especially after soaking.

You should also keep brushing your natural teeth, gums, and tongue to support good overall oral health while you wear dentures.

Proper care doesn’t just keep your mouth healthy; it can help your partial denture stay in good condition for years to come!
