7 things you didn’t know about dentures

Losing your teeth over time can be damaging to your confidence and the way you live your life. Thanks to modern dental technology, dentures can be affordable and comfortable and can restore your oral function back to the way it was when you had teeth.

Dentures can be a fantastic option if you want to look more youthful and have a healthy oral function.

We want our patients to know as much as possible before deciding on their dentures so they know exactly what they’re getting. So here are 8 things you probably didn’t know about dentures that might surprise you.

Dentures don’t have sensation

You probably knew dentures don’t have sensation, but you might not have realised how much sensation natural teeth actually have.

Whether you have implant dentures, partial dentures or permanent dentures, you want to make sure you’re taking good care of them. Hot liquid can damage your dentures, so be sure to check the temperature of your food and liquid to protect yourself from scalds and denture repairs which could have been avoided.

This doesn’t come without its perks though, as now you can enjoy delicious ice cream and cold drinks without any tooth sensitivity!

You can have partial dentures

If you have lost some of your teeth for whatever reason, either from tooth decay or gum disease, you can replace your missing teeth with false teeth, even if you have some remaining teeth.

There are different types of partial dentures, from chrome dentures with metal clasps, to flexible dentures and acrylic dentures. Your dental technician can help choose the most suitable option for you.

Dentures support your facial structure

Teeth are a commonly overlooked aspect of beauty and youthfulness, even when your mouth is closed, your teeth are supporting the tissues of your face, from your cheeks to your lips and jaw! A face without tooth support can have sagging skin and a more sunken-in appearance.

Dentures can return your face back to its original appearance and unwind the clock of ageing. And, with healthy looking teeth, your smile will look youthful, restoring your confidence.

Dentures can be a temporary solution

You may want dentures immediately after you lose a tooth, but permanent dentures or denture implants require the gum to be completely healed before they can be installed by your dental technician.

Before your implant supported dentures, you can get temporary removable dentures that can replace your missing teeth.

Dentures need cleaning and care

While some dentures require more care than others, it is important to keep up with your oral hygiene to ensure you don’t suffer from any complications from your denture usage. Make sure you remove your dentures at night to give your gums time to breathe, and clean them over a bowl of water or a soft towel to prevent a broken denture!

Dentures are for all ages

Although the main clientele for the denture industry are more mature patients, dentures can be a suitable option for the young patients who have lost some, or all of their teeth for whatever reason.

This can restore their confidence and their oral function, so they can continue living their life as they did when they had teeth.

Soft foods can help you transition into dentures

Dentures can give you the full effect of complete functioning teeth, but many patients find it difficult and awkward to eat with dentures when they first get them.

Before you dive into hard foods like steak, we recommend sticking to soft foods as they are easier to chew, to help you adjust into life with dentures.
