How do implant retained dentures work and what are they?

Gone are the days of embarrassing moments with loose and poorly fitting dentures that seem to jump out of your mouth when you speak or eat.  As would be expected, things have changed in the way dentures are made and stabilised in the mouth.  One way we can do this is by implant retained dentures but what are they?

Implant retained dentures are not your typical type of denture, but are a great option for those of you that struggle with denture stability. They, as you would assume, work with implants on the upper or lower jaw.

They are still a removable appliance and simply click on and off of the implant components, which protrude through the gums in the mouth.

The implants are embedded into the jaw and are then used to anchor the denture into place

Can anyone have implant retained dentures?

Unfortunately not. It is always necessary to visit a dentist if you are considering the option of implant retained dentures as certain aspects must be assessed before we know whether or not you are a suitable candidate for dental implants.

If you are given the go ahead for dental implants, leading into implant retained dentures, we here at Kevin Manners Denture Clinics will work in conjunction with the dentist placing the implants and will create you your perfect smile.

Before the procedure is started, you will need a temporary denture to wear whilst the implants heal.  This is done in the same way that a regular denture is made.  A recent KMDC Blog article all about what to expect when having new dentures is useful to read if you’d like to find out more about the denture consultation process and how many visits it will take.

The implants will have small attachments placed on top of them which will act as the corresponding components for the denture and are what allow the denture to click in place on top of the implants.

Whether you’re considering having an implant retained denture from start to finish, including the placing of the implants or you just want a new denture to connect onto your existing implants, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and visit one of our clinics in Nottingham, Newark, Mansfield, Mapperley and Radcliffe on Trent.

You can call us directly on 0115 941 7052 to speak to one of our friendly staff and get booked in for a free denture consultation.
