How do you know when it’s time to get new dentures? Maybe you’re no longer happy with the fit, look or feel of your existing ones? Here’s when we recommend you replace your dentures with new ones.
After 5 years
As a general rule, you should be looking to get new dentures after five years, however, you may choose to replace them sooner if you’re no longer happy with how they look or feel.
When chewing becomes difficult
Wear and tear on the back teeth of your dentures can make chewing more difficult or even painful. If this is the case, it is time to replace your existing dentures with new ones.
When dentures look false
Wear and tear on the front teeth of your dentures can flatten them out, making them look false. If you think your dentures look false, or simply don’t like the way they look anymore, it’s time to replace them.
When dentures don’t fit right
When you lose your natural teeth, your body’s response is to reduce the bone that once held the tooth in place (called bone resorption). This means that the fit of your denture will become less and less accurate over time leading to a need for new dentures.
If you experience breakages
Poor-fitting dentures (often caused by bone resorption) can lead to breakages. While you can repair dentures rather than replacing them, regular breakages and associated repair costs can add up over time so it can be worth investing in a new set of correctly fitted dentures.
When you lose more natural teeth
Partial denture wearers will need to get new dentures when they lose more natural teeth. If you continue to use your existing dentures after further tooth loss you could risk facing problems with chewing, the surrounding muscles and your jaw joints as your remaining teeth with tilt, rotate and shift to support the gap left by your lost tooth.
When you look ‘witchy’
Older or incorrectly made full dentures can allow the lower jaw to travel too far when closing the back teeth – leading to a protruding upper jaw that gives you a classic ‘witchy’ look. New dentures can realign the jaw and give you a facelift that makes you look 10 years younger.
